Populism & Nationalism: A threat to Europe?
79098 Freiburg im Breisgau
Student field trip to Brussels May 01, 2017 In collaboration with the Verein zur Förderung politischen Handelns e.V. and the generous support of the Neue Universitätsstiftung Freiburg
The Global Order Project takes you on a trip!
Populism and Nationalism are currently rising phenomena in Europe. We want to take this as an occasion to travel to the heart of Europe, Brussels, and examine the developments further. What are the similarities and differences between the populist movements in the different countries? What do they mean for the European Union itself? How should we deal with them?
During the trip, we will have the opportunity to visit central European political institutions such as the European Parliament and the European Commission, talk to representatives of populist parties (AfD and Syriza), and learn more about think tanks such as European Network Against Racism and the Foundation for European Progressive Studies.
We are very thankful to organize this trip with the generous support of the Neue Universitätsstiftung Freiburg.
Day One - May 2 2017 May 01, 2017 Arrival, first impressions and brain storming
Global Order Project is in Brussels!
Today we have attended a workshop to learn what does populism mean and what connections does it have to righ-wing politics in todays Europe. We have also have prepared questions to ask our host speakers tomorrow.
Can't wait for visiting European Parliament tomorrow!
Day Two - May 3 2017 May 02, 2017 European Network against Racism and European Parliament
Today the GOP team had the honor to get an insight into the work of the European Network Against Racism and ask them questions about how does populism influences hate crimes in Europe.
After a short lunch we rushed to the European Parliament to meet Beatrix von Storch from AfD Germany and Peter Niedermüller from S&D Hungary. We have received two very different perspectives on the future of Europe and the role of populism within it.
Day Three - May 4 2017 May 03, 2017 Foundation for European Progressive Studies, European Commission and Spokesperson
Today Global Order Project team attended a worshop given by Maria Freitas in the Foundation for European Progressive Studies #FEPS where we discussed deeper the root causes of populism (like fear of globalization), and what strategies could progressive politicians employ to resist it.
Later, we had an honor to be present at the European Commission's Midday Briefing by the Commission's spokesperson Margaritis Schinas. Directly after we had a chance to interview three Spokesperson's Service officers: Daniela Stoycheva, Press Assistant to the EC Deputy Chief Spokesman, Daniel Ferrie, Press Officer for Article 50 negotioations with the UK, and Mina Andreeva, EC Deputy Chief Spokeswoman. All the Officers gave us the insight about the EC communication strategies, thrive for transparency, the threat populism poses to the core European values, and the future of the EU as described in the latest EC White Paper of the Future of Europe.
Besides, we caught a chance to listen to the Press Point of the Norvegian Foreign Minister and the European Union foreign policy chief on the EU's actions in Palestina.
Day Four - May 5 2017 May 04, 2017 Council of the European Union, Wrap up and Goodbye
On our last day in Brussels, we had the chance to complete our impressions of the core European Institutions with a visit to the Council of the European Union. Vincenzo de Voci, the Press and Communication Administrator of the council informed us about the council’s work, its public relations strategy and, most importantly, about the way the EU communicates in times of challenges, such as the current migration crisis. After we asked more questions, it was time to wrap up the seminar with a final discussion of the extremely diverse insights our group got during the past days. In the afternoon, after a feedback-round, it was, sadly, time to go back to Freiburg.
We all perceived the seminar as a greatly enriching experience that taught us a lot of new things about populism and the EU but also made us rethink old views. Lastly, many thanks go to the Verein zur Förderung politischen Handelns #VFH for the excellent cooperation!
